Week December 7-11

Math:

This week we started unit 4 on geometry. The focus of this unit is on angles. We studied the different types of angles - 'angle aigu', 'angle obtus', 'angle droit', 'angle plat', 'angle rentrant' -, how to measure them and also how to trace them using a protractor.

On Friday we learned and practiced the theorem on the angles of a triangle:
'The sum of interior angles of a triangle is equal to 180 degrees.'

We also covered 'angles supplémentaires', when 2 angles together form an horizontal line (180 degrees = 'angle plat'). Knowing the measure of one of the angle allows to calculate the other one.

Students should now be able to find one missing measure of an angle in a triangle (being given enough information).

See Elboya VLC calendar for details on homework and due dates.

Science:

Proof and Investigation:
This week we  learned about detailed characteristics of fingerprints: 'bifurcation', 'île', 'lac', 'fin de l`arête'. Students added this analysis to their own fingerprints.

On Thursday, we had a day on 'Current events in science'. Students watched a recent French documentary about 'technology used in education'. They had to find PROS and CONS, list solid arguments and debate in class.

Friday 4 December 2015

Week November 30 - December 3

Math:

This week we finished and corrected the REVIEW DOCUMENT on chapter 3 - decimal numbers. We had the test on Wednesday (place value, form of representation, multiplication, division and problem solving with decimals).

Parents, expect the test to come home and be signed sometime next week. We will start chapter 4 on geometry (angles) on Monday.

See Elboya VLC calendar for details on homework and due dates.

Science:

Proof and Investigation:
This week we  observed and analyzed shoe tracks in the snow (outside!) in order to make inferences about speed and different ways of locomotion. We also created dichotomous keys in order to classify tracks according the characteristics of  prints/patterns under shoes.

Finally, we learned about fingerprints - whorl, loop, arch, composite. Students got to record and analyse their own fingerprints in class!

Wednesday 2 December 2015

Week November 23-27

Math:

This week we learned how to divide decimal numbers (only by a single digit positive integer) and get to a final answer with NO REMAINDER - adding zeros and continuing the division until there is no remainder. We practiced it in word problems as well.

Here is a reminder of important steps to follow when solving problems:

1) Read the problem at least 2 or 3 times
2) Understand what the question is asking and highlight the important numbers/info in the text (cross out the info that is not useful!)
3) Write all calculation needed to solve the problem in an ORGANIZED way (few words  :  calculation __units)
4) Answer the initial question with a short sentence including units ($, L, Kg, etc.)

Students received a REVIEW DOCUMENT on Friday in order to prepare for their coming on test decimal numbers (chap.3) next Wednesday.

See Elboya VLC calendar for details on homework and due dates.

Science:

Proof and Investigation:
This week we kept practicing Observation Vs Inference by playing a few games in class. We also studied animal tracks, making inferences on the possible animals involved, their speed and direction.
